Twenty bird feeders refilled every week during three months were helping over a thousand wintering songbirds to stay over winter of 2019-2020.

Continuous habitat transformation brings to the point, when birds wintering in lowlands face food scarcity. In such situation, it is fare to feed the birds which are coming to city, because cannot find enough food in their natural habitats. The Botanical Garden of Yerevan is such a place which hosts about 30 species of songbirds every winter. That is why, we with more than 20 volunteers organized the winter feeding in this great place.

We have made 20 feeders from plastic bottles and have been following them every week refilling with the best mix of grains and seeds. In addition, for the tits we hang about ten balls of fat. The food was well received by birds, and every time visiting the area, we have been observing the feeders almost empty. The process was very catching and during every action, it attracted a lot of newcomers, walking or exercising in the Garden.

After each action we have been doing observations of the birds, to better understand the entire wintering bird fauna of the Garden. It resulted to a total list of 38 species of wintering birds, including such rare visitors as Black-throated Thrush, Redwing, Siskin, and Goldcrest. The songbirds attract also raptors, and while the Eurasian Sparrowhawk is an everyday bird, but the Northern Goshawk is an asset among the visitors!

The Botanical Garden is a perfect place for wintering birds and it is worth to spend the efforts on feeding the birds here. The action has a great education potential as attracts families and teaches the kids from the lowest age.
